When airline employees try to cart her wheelchair off to the cargo hold, disability advocate Jill Hindman becomes even more assertive than usual. Like Hindman, many people with disabilities are frustrated with air travel, especially in smaller planes. Complaints range from lavatories that are too cramped to move around in to armrests that won't budge and outdated aisle chair designs that just don't make sense. Although the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) of 1986 falls short of offering total equality for people with disabilities--the industry cites safety regulations and potential costs when responding to feedback from passengers with mobility issues--there are a few things one can do to make traveling by air a little more tolerable. In this article, the author offers a few solutions for wheelchair users who fly.
