An Introduction to the Contemporary Update
Dunkle, John H.
New Directions for Student Services, n128 p5-10 Win 2009
Two decades have come and gone since Ursula Delworth introduced to the student affairs profession her Assessment-Intervention of Student Problems (AISP) model (Delworth, 1989). Notwithstanding all of the changes, the AISP model remains a relevant and useful framework for student affairs professionals in dealing with students of concern. The chapters in this volume reintroduce the profession of student affairs to the Delworth AISP model and will help them to think about how to use it in the contemporary context of higher education in the United States. To start, the author frames this volume by briefly highlighting some of the major changes that have occurred in higher education in the past two decades: (1) concerns about acts of violence; (2) student generational changes; (3) legal issues and accreditation standards; (4) institutional diversity; and (5) advances in information technology.
