Portfolios: Justify Your Job as a Library Media Specialist and the Media Budget during Times of Budget Cuts
Allen, Melissa; Bradley, Amy
Library Media Connection, v28 n3 p48-50 Nov-Dec 2009
During this time of economic crisis and the projected budget cuts in education, it is more important than ever to justify one's position as a critical element in the school. One excellent way to document the need for a full-time, certified media specialist in the school is through a portfolio. Maintaining a portfolio is cheap and fairly easy, because one is just documenting all the wonderful things one does on a daily basis. In this article, the authors talk about portfolios as great tools to ensure job security. They divided the portfolio into the following sections for organizational purposes: (1) Goals and Standards; (2) Budgets; (3) Professional Development; (4) Publicity; and (5) Feedback and Evaluations. The authors stress that a table of contents at the beginning of the portfolio should list all sections and documents contained within the notebook to make it easy to find specific information.
