The Five Pillars of Reading
Anderson, Cynthia
Library Media Connection, v28 n2 p22, 24-25 Oct 2009
Developing lifelong readers is integral to the role of the librarian. Facilitating, encouraging, and promoting reading is not an add-on to the job. Consider the role librarians play in developing readers in school. They know they are contributors; they must make sure the school community is aware of their valuable role in supporting the five pillars of reading. Let it be known: School librarians are at the core of developing student literacy. In this article, the author takes a quick look at the five pillars of reading, basic components of any reading program, and sees what they are and where librarians might fit.
