Exploring the Self
Edwards, Laura
Arts & Activities, v146 n3 p20-21, 46 Nov 2009
Throughout life, people are faced with the challenge of defining all aspects of their being. Definitions of self can emerge by taking time to contemplate the meaning that saturates thoughts and actions. This process is essential for the unfolding of the future so a person does not become someone who wanders aimlessly through life. Self-awareness seems to provide a sense of direction. Unfortunately, some students have never taken the time to reflect and piece together their evolving identities. In this article, students explore their self through a printmaking project. Printmaking is a fabulous medium that appeals to all types of learners. There is the designing, the gouging, the printing and the creative mixed-media solutions. Through this artistic journey, students can encounter a deeper vision of their "self."
