Spiritual and Religious Supports Part 8: Church G.L.U.E.
Newman, Barbara J.
Exceptional Parent, v39 n9 p42-43 Sep 2009
CLC Network is an organization that partners with churches, schools, and families to help promote and build inclusive and interdependent communities for those with disabilities. This article describes CLC Network's most recent tool--a book entitled the G.L.U.E. Training Manual. G.L.U.E. is an adhesive process to allow each individual to be firmly embedded within the local church community. Rooted in Scripture and God's expectations for communities, Giving, Loving, Understanding, and Encouraging are the words that make up the G.L.U.E. acronym and undergird this six-step process. G.L.U.E. "gives support to faith communities, enabling people with disabilities to participate in the different areas of congregational life throughout their lives." As congregations walk through this process, they will get to know that child or adult with a disability and discover practical ways to include that individual in areas of worship, education, fellowship, and service. The focus will not only be on creating an individual plan, but also to create a congregational plan to discover ways the community will grow together. G.L.U.E. defines a step-by-step process that a congregation can follow.
