5 Steps to Safer Schools
Kilman, Carrie
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n4 p37-38 Dec 2009
For lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) students, school is rarely a safe space, much less an environment conducive to learning. Seventy-five percent of gay students report being verbally abused at school, and more than a third say they are physically harassed. And research shows that LGBTQ students are five times more likely to report having skipped school in the last 30 days because of safety concerns than the general population of students. This article presents five ways educators and schools can create learning environments free of anti-gay discrimination: (1) Provide explicit support systems for LGBTQ students; (2) Serve as allies and role models; (3) Employ inclusive and respectful curricula; (4) Include anti-gay bullying in anti-harassment policies; and (5) Advocate for statewide antidiscrimination laws.
