In July 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections began delivering a two-hour training session titled Reinforcing Positive Behavior to new employees as part of their required orientation to the Department. The purpose of the training was to inform all employees about their roles and responsibilities for reinforcing positive behavior and supporting treatment concepts. Findings from an attitude survey administered to the new employees revealed that the training was effective in increasing the understanding that all staff have the responsibility to promote a good social environment, model positive behavior, and correct inappropriate behavior in a prison. Specific findings showed that treatment staff generally placed these responsibilities on all staff, regardless of job category, while correctional officers consistently rated themselves as the group most responsible.
