The authors define deflection as a strategy to bounce action or responsibility away from oneself and toward another person, time, or place. Although they contend that deflection occurs in all areas of personal and professional life, the authors limit their focus to the deflective colleague ("collega deflectivus") in academe. In this article, the authors share seven natural habits of deflective colleagues based on their extensive qualitative fieldwork across their own campus, conducted over several years. The authors first present a few basic facts about deflection and, then, discuss the seven habits of deflective colleagues: (1) Circumspect deflect; (2) Classic deflect; (3) Cog-in-the-Wheel deflect; (4) Sycophant deflect; (5) Pirouette deflect; (6) Introspect deflect; and (7) Paralysis-by-Analysis deflect. A few points to consider to master these habits are presented.
