Thinking green is normal for the current generation of high school students, who have always had recycling bins in their classrooms and green themes in their assemblies, their lessons, and their television shows. It follows that sophisticated, multidisciplinary programs are now operating in schools throughout the country to educate students about the environment while providing them with hands-on study in physical sciences, such as chemistry and physics, and social sciences, such as communications and political science. Those programs are paying off in a number of ways, according to people behind them, but perhaps most importantly, they generate student interest. This article describes some environmental programs at different schools, lists ten ways that school administrators can help develop or support environmental education programs, and details ten benefits of a good environmental education program.
