Paradise Valley Community College
Dale, Paul A.
New Directions for Student Services, n127 p69-77 Fall 2009
Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), located in Phoenix, Arizona, is part of the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). PVCC was founded in 1987 and in the fall of 2007 served 8,739 students in credit courses. Since 1997, PVCC has been on a quest to become a "more learning centered" college. As a result of placing student learning at the core of everything it does, a number of organizational changes were made. First, PVCC's core operating practices are now driven by 12 learning-centered indicators. Second, PVCC reorganized its organizational structure to better align resources with student learning and better support the comprehensive student learning experience that recognizes and values learning in and out of the classroom. There are three organizational divisions: Learning (formerly academic affairs), Learning Support Services (formerly student affairs), and Administrative Services. The Learning Support Services division melds the traditional student affairs functions with all of the out-of-class academic support units in an effort to link the in-class and out-of-class learning experience for students. Third, the Learning Support Services division committed to identifying and making concrete learning outcomes, assessing learning outcomes in order to improve learning and service productivity, and aligning student affairs policies and procedures to maximize student learning. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Paradise Valley Community College including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Paradise Valley Community College.
