New Directions for Student Services, n127 p61-68 Fall 2009
Oregon State University (OSU) is located in Corvallis, a community of 53,000 people situated in the heart of the Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene. Approximately 15,700 undergraduate and 3,400 graduate students, including 2,600 U.S. students of color and 950 international students, are currently enrolled at OSU across 11 academic colleges. Within the organizational structure of the university, the vice provost for student affairs reports directly to the provost and executive vice president. Currently, the Division of Student Affairs comprises 14 departments and offices. The division imparts the essential leadership for the out-of-classroom education of students, the co-curriculum that complements and supplements the academic areas, and the various services necessary for successful student retention and graduation. The mission of the Division of Student Affairs is to contribute to and facilitate the success of students and Oregon State University. The philosophy of Student Affairs is firmly grounded in the belief that an engaged student is far more likely to achieve and be successful than a disengaged student. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Oregon State University including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Oregon State University.
