Beyond the Revitalizing High School Libraries Initiative
Marczynski, Paula Townsend
Library Media Connection, v28 n1 p32-33 Aug-Sep 2009
In 2003 the Public Education Network developed the pilot Revitalizing High School Libraries (RHSL) initiative, funded by The New York Life Foundation. Based on the Library Power Program, it included many of the same features--collaborative planning, flexible scheduling, collection development, and facility renovation--with a focus on how this initiative could impact high school libraries and student success. The RHSL was a two-year project which provided four high schools in three cities the funding and support needed to make significant changes in their library environment and collection and documented the results along the way; the author's school was one of the four chosen. Policy Studies Associates conducted independent evaluations midway through and at the end of the grant. The opportunity to participate in the RHSL initiative was a dream come true. For the first time in the author's 30-plus years as a library media specialist, she was able to provide her students and teachers with the up-to-date resources they needed and an extensive variety of leisure-reading materials they could enjoy. The improvements made in the author's library media center showed that by providing students with a wide variety of diverse reading materials on topics of interest to them--and in a comfortable setting--librarians will engage them and encourage them to read for enjoyment as well as learning. In this article, the author offers some tips that would be effective anywhere in improving a library media center program, no matter what its resources.
