The tradition in educational development is to work within institutions, often grouping people of similar roles from different academic fields for a common purpose, as in the orientation of new lecturers or provision of teaching assistant workshops for graduate students. Furthermore, development activities conventionally focus on one dimension of academic practice (such as teaching) or an even more specific aspect (such as assessment). The goal of this article is to explore and illustrate "third space" activity. Third spaces involve interactions between people who may have different personal intentions, but are drawn to working together due to common perception of the value or importance of the object at hand. These new constellations of people, and the common motive they share, offer degrees of freedom to explore new possibilities outside the constraints of established modes of working which shape interactions in the various contexts from which people come.
