In an election season, the discussion of politics in the classroom can become a minefield of potential disasters for students and teachers alike both in relation to the material being discussed and the social, emotional, and overall identity development of the students. Through a concentrated effort involving curricular activities as well as extracurricular activities designed to enhance the relationships between students while exposing them to the nuances present in the political opinions of people throughout the world and in their own school, progress can be made in demonstrating to students that the world isn't nearly as black-and-white as they make it out to be. Furthermore, students can come to see that political discussions can be productive and engage everyone in looking more deeply--beyond the rhetoric and talking points--into the essence of what makes up the political process in this country.
