PLATE: Powerful Learning and Teaching Environments
Housand, Angela
Understanding Our Gifted, v21 n4 p17-19 Sum 2009
The environment has a profound effect on the ability of students to regulate their behavior or disposition and effectively engage in the learning processes. Active engagement is important because it increases performance. Certain types of environmental structures actually increase students' ability to be agents of their own learning. These environments: (1) provide choice and control over learning tasks; (2) offer complex tasks that extend over time; (3) create opportunities for students to seek help from sources other than the teacher; and (4) allow students to participate in self-evaluation. In addition to environmental influences, self-regulated learning is also affected by an individual's perceptions, behaviors, personality, and abilities. Individual factors such as interest, personal effort, goal orientation, self-efficacy, and motivation also influence students' ability to self-regulate learning. These factors must be considered. As educators, there are several steps that they can take to help students become motivated to learn, feel that they are capable of learning, and enable them to initiate learning. This article offers some practical ways in keeping students on task.
