Lindstrom, Lauren; Johnson, Pamela; Doren, Bonnie; Zane, Claire; Post, Cindy; Harley, Eliza
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v40 n4 p66-71 Mar-Apr 2008
This article provides an overview of the development and implementation of Career Connections, a specialized curriculum specifically designed to address existing gender and disability barriers, in addition to increasing self-awareness and building self-confidence. The Career Connections curriculum consisted of four modules: (1) Self-awareness; (2) Disability awareness; (3) Gender roles and issues; and (4) Career planning. Each of these modules is discussed and a sample activity from each module is presented. Although the authors designed the curriculum to be self-contained, educators can also use these lessons as freestanding activities. The activities are appropriate for small groups or as individual planning tools for expanding career options for young women with disabilities. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)
