Students Create Art: Expanding an After-School Program
Schwartz, Diane C.; Pace, Darra
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v40 n4 p50-54 Mar-Apr 2008
For the past 4 years the special education program at History University has partnered with a Long Island, New York school district in an after-school tutorial program for eighth grade students receiving special education services or considered "at risk." This partnership emerged as a result of a state improvement grant offered to "high need" school districts within the state. Together the district and the university crafted an after-school program that would give district students support in areas of need. Initially, the prime focus of the program centered on academic support. However, because the program is housed on a university campus, they decided to take advantage of the sophisticated technology and other materials available at the Curriculum Materials Center of the Hofstra library. Impressed with the research results indicating the relationship between arts integration and academic achievement, the authors looked to the visual arts collection at the Emily Lowe Gallery at the Hofstra University Museum. Visiting the Hofstra Museum gave the students an opportunity to go outside their everyday world and be exposed to the cultural literacy through the arts. The experience gave Hofstra's graduate tutors and faculty the chance to see inside the students' world. (Contains 1 table.)
