Music Experiences for Toddlers in Day Care Centres
Suthers, Louie
Australian Journal of Early Childhood, v29 n4 p45-49 Dec 2004
Music offers toddlers many opportunities for playful exploration, discovery, self-expression and communication. However, in some settings the reality of the many demands of a busy daily program means children are offered only occasional or limited music experiences. Further, some playroom staff are uncertain about how best to plan music experiences appropriate for children under three. In this project, three types of music experiences were effectively implemented in a toddler playroom over the course of one year. Music became part of caregiving routines, free play, and sociable experience. This article documents the three types of music experiences and the responses of the children and the staff members. Implications for practice are also considered.
