Cochlear Implantation for Children with Hearing Loss and Multiple Disabilities: An Evaluation from an Educator's Perspective
Bertram, Bodo
Volta Review, v104 n4 p349-359 2004
In recent years, parents of children with hearing loss and various additional disabilities have shown increasing interest in cochlear implants. This article describes how the program in Hanover, Germany is attempting to respond to this interest. It discusses the selection process for children who receive cochlear implants who have multiple disabilities, the necessity of in-depth information and counseling for parents, and the role that additional disabilities play in determining the success of (re)habilitation. A multi-dimensional, team approach is proposed to maximize success for both the child and the family.
