Today education is a key factor in developing an open society in Kazakhstan. Currently there are many discussions about how to make changes in the educational system in order to help learners become independent and interdependent, effective, and responsible citizens. The role of universities is to generate diverse opportunities for civic action, critical thinking, and personal responsibility in building democratic principles of life, mutual understanding, and independent learning. In this context, Kazakhstan Universities recognize the concept of citizenship education as a fundamental basis of democracy. At the same time they are facing a big dilemma--how to teach democratic values such as citizenship, active participation in society, civil responsibility, cooperation, open-mindedness, tolerance and respect for other people. Teaching students how to be active participants in society is an important goal of education. Interactive methods of teaching are considered as an effective way to teach democracy. How students learn as well as how teachers teach is important in creating a democratic classroom. Interactive methods of teaching represent the spirit of democratization because openness, mutual understanding, willingness to help each other, responsibility, and accountability can help students become active learners as well as active citizens. There are five basic interactive strategies of teaching: (a) the problem-solving approach; (b) collaborative learning; (c) discussions; (d) role playing, simulations, and games; and (e) interactive assessment. This article considers these approaches using interaction between a learner and teacher in the learning process.
