The authors document the conceptualization, over time, of "fussy baby syndrome" and the establishment of a Fussy Baby Clinic. Excessive infant crying (commonly called colic) typically subsides in the first 3 months but may set up a cycle of parent-infant distress. Families studied felt a high degree of emotional stress and physical exhaustion; experienced isolation and criticism; searched constantly for answers and solutions; experienced a lost sense of self and baby; and responded best to empathic listeners. The interdisciplinary Fussy Baby Network offers preventive services, support, assessment and intervention, and training and consultation. The Network seeks to give parents the message that: "You are not alone. You are a good parent."
