Teaching for the Fun of It
Mitcham, Karen
English Journal, v98 n6 p13-14 Jul 2009
The purpose of having fun in the English language arts (ELA) classroom is twofold: (1) build community; and (2) alleviate the monotony, drudgery, and anxiety that reading, speaking, and writing often produce, especially in struggling students and any and all who are future members of Garrison Keillor's Lake Woebegone Professional Organization of English Majors (POEM). In this article, the author describes some fun activities in her ELA classroom. The results after they have had fun in her ELA classroom are manifold. Students get to know each other, and through that knowing, they understand one another's differences and are more respectful of one another. Students trust their inner voices a little more.
