Implications of the Counseling Psychology Model Training Values Statement Addressing Diversity for Education and Training in Professional Psychology
Grus, Catherine L.
Counseling Psychologist, v37 n5 p752-759 2009
Quality education and training is a commitment made to future generations of psychologists by those assuming the role of a faculty member or supervisor. One widely recognized hallmark of quality in professional psychology education and training is accreditation of doctoral programs by the American Psychological Association's Commission on Accreditation. However, quality in education and training is exemplified in other ways, such as in best or promising practices that represent consensus efforts of groups within the field. Quality education and training is enhanced by ongoing examination of needs and the development of initiatives to address those needs to enhance education and training. "The Counseling Psychology Model Training Values Statement" (called "Values Statement") meets such an identified need and in turn will serve to enhance excellence. Its broad endorsement by the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP), the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA), and the Society for Counseling Psychology (SCP) speaks to its timeliness and relevance to the education and training community. This article discusses the implications of the "Values Statement" addressing diversity for education and training in professional psychology.
