Downes, Stephen
Innovate: Journal of Online Education, v3 n2 Dec 2006-Jan 2007
In response to the rise in learning institutions making materials available online, Open University has created OpenLearn, a site that offers entire course materials to its users. In this article, Stephen Downes takes a tour of this site, commenting on its academic components as well as its pedagogical possibilities. Going a step beyond what most other comparable sites offer, OpenLearn encourages the sharing and remixing of course materials; moreover, the availability and range of community tools it offers, including discussion forums, Web-based videoconferencing, and instant messaging, creates a network of support for its users. Downes propounds that the properties of Open Learn will, in fact, set a new standard for open access.
