Making the Most of the One-Shot You Got
Deemer, Kevin
Community & Junior College Libraries, v14 n1 p21-26 2007
It is a challenge, especially for librarians new to instruction, to create effective and meaningful classroom experiences for students when given only one class session. While a one-shot BI class is not an ideal learning environment, it is still a very common instructional practice. This article describes the Direct-Instruction Teaching Model and how it can be used as a framework to create one shot bibliographic instruction lessons designed to promote learning. The model not only provides the librarian with control over the content and direction of the class, but also actively involves students throughout the lesson. This model can help new teaching librarians develop instructional confidence.
