Directing the Dispositions
Ballard, Susan D.
Library Media Connection, v27 n6 p14 May-Jun 2009
Dispositions make up the affective side of the library media profession. They work in concert with the content, skills, and knowledge base used to meet the needs of students and faculty. At first the author had difficulty with the term :dispositions" when it appeared in "AASL's Standards for the 21st-Century Learner". Through further analysis she changed her position, noting that in the evaluation of a teacher, one looks for solid evidence of content expertise or the "science" of teaching. Also, it is equally important to consider that a teacher exhibits a deep commitment to student learning, is open-minded and reflective, is engaged and enthusiastic, and is confident and willing to be flexible--disposed as it were to the "art" of teaching. The authors' personal analysis showed that teachers really do address dispositions in the instructional programs.
