Mobility: Not Just the Ability to Move--Tips for Gaining Acceptance and Moving Toward Community Connections
DeZonia, Krysti
Exceptional Parent, v39 n5 p30-31 May 2009
For many people, particularly those with significant intellectual and communication disabilities, community access has not led to community acceptance or integration. While uniquely-abled individuals are present in local neighborhoods and businesses, they continue to be viewed as "outsiders" and are often are met with avoidance, fear, or pity. Because those who have significant challenges with communication or mobility are often unable to make connections with others without assistance, it is important that the people who help them access and be mobile in their community have strategies they can use to promote connection and acceptance. Stories are very powerful tools that help shape the thinking of others. The stories that family members and caregivers tell can make or break the perspectives and perceptions of others regarding children and adults with significant disabilities and can impact the opportunities they are offered and the quality of life they lead. This author recommends that parents take the time to create a small book of positive, humanizing stories about their children. This tool can be incorporated as part of a caregiver's repertoire for helping the person for whom they offer support be able to move successfully towards developing true relationships that will enhance their lives.
