Trans Youth Faces: Photographs of Mariette Pathy Allen
Beemyn, Brett Genny; Sanders, Jim
Journal of Gay & Lesbian Issues in Education, v3 n1 p95-105 2005
Despite more representations of transgender people in popular culture today than ten or twenty years ago, the dominant image of a transgender individual continues to be a middle-aged "guy in a dress." Perhaps that "guy" is now perceived to be in a more stylish dress than in the past and to look more feminine, but the image remains one of a male cross-dresser or a drag queen--a man appearing as a woman. The distinction between these groups and transwomen--women who were born into male bodies--are largely erased. Transmen and individuals who refuse to identify and/or express themselves as either male or female are even more frequently overlooked, and transgender youth are almost completely invisible. It is this lack of representations of the diversity of transgender expression, particularly the absence of images of trans youth, that makes the pictures of Mariette Pathy Allen so valuable. This article presents a photo-essay of Allen's images which challenge viewers to rethink not only how they envision (trans)gender, but also the need to classify someone as either female or male. The marchers in the FIERCE (Fabulous Independent Educated Radicals for Community Empowerment) demonstration pictured in this photo-essay express the desire of all of the youth to be seen--and to be seen as themselves.
