Developmental History of U.S. State Department Office of Drug Demand Reduction's International Training
Deitch, David; Koutsenok, Igor
Journal of Teaching in the Addictions, v4 n1 p1-17 2005
The development of the drug overuse and addiction treatment models in the United States has an enormous impact on the adoption of similar activities throughout the world. The increased globalization of substance abuse attracted treatment practitioners from Europe to the U.S. to examine the implementation of therapeutic community and other models as viable treatment approaches for substance abusers, eventually leading to adoption of these models not only in Europe, but also in Latin America and Southeast Asia. This article discusses the acceptance of the therapeutic community and other models across the globe, and the technical assistance and training efforts to assist these countries in implementing such models in the context of a study to evaluate the drug treatment and aftercare efforts sponsored by the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
