Geographical and Environmental Education in the Northern Territory
Battalis, Chrissie; Boland, Judy
International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education, v15 n2 p189-192 2006
The Northern Territory is a semi-autonomous region in the north of Australia. It is one of three Territories and six States that constitute the Commonwealth of Australia. The mainland States and Territories all maintain separate education systems, responsible to the Minister for Education in each State or Territory. In the Northern Territory's Department of Employment, Education and Training, the responsibility for curriculum rests with the Curriculum Services Branch of the Department. The curriculum is divided into Key Learning Areas and individual subjects are assigned to these areas. Geography finds itself encompassed by the broader nomenclature of Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) which also includes Environmental Education, History, Enterprise, Civics and Citizenship. In this article, the authors discuss the geographical and environmental education in the Northern Territory.
