Geography in Western Australia--A Time of Transition
Cawley, Rosemary
International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education, v15 n2 p171-175 2006
The Western Australian schooling system is in the final phase of the move towards Outcomes Based Education with the Post Compulsory Geography Course of Study commencing in 2007. This move has been somewhat controversial amongst politicians, teachers and parent groups, partly because of the negative press Outcomes Based Education has received in other systems nationally and internationally. The author discusses the change from the current Post Compulsory Geography syllabus that has been embraced by the majority of Western Australian Geography teachers because the current syllabus apart from being in use for well over 20 years is content driven and considered by most to be far too parochial. However, the change from a prescriptive set of objectives to four outcomes is considered to be a quantum leap. In the midst of all this radical change, Western Australian Geography teachers live in hope that the large amount of Professional Development and development work that the new Post Compulsory Geography Course of Study brings will also benefit their subject.
