Working Together for the Right Reasons
Skinner, Wendy A.
Understanding Our Gifted, v20 n4 p19-20 Sum 2008
As the mother of a gifted daughter, the author has worked diligently with teachers to nurture her child's talents and support the healthy development of her child's sense of self--one that is self-determined, has self-control, and creates feelings of genuine self-worth. Clearly, parents and teachers can work together to make a positive difference for children. Gifted children have astounding potential. They need positive encouragement and guidance from their parents and teachers. As children grow older, they may choose unique ways of creating a healthy self-esteem. The parents' roles are to encourage and guide, accepting their children's autonomous choices. Parents need to make certain that their motives are genuine and selfless, as they support their children's unique development and express their pride in their children's accomplishments. In this article, the author talks about her daughter playing violin--what motivated her, her social problems, her measure of success and satisfaction, and her musical accomplishments. The author has learned how important it is that every parent and every teacher recognize why they are working together for the child. They need to offer encouragement, guidance, and emotional support, while allowing the child to follow her own life plan.
