Globalised Education: The International Baccalaureate
Anttila-Muilu, Sirpa
International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education, v13 n4 p364-369 Nov 2004
When the author started as a geography teacher in an International Baccalaureate School (IB world school) 10 years ago she noticed more than a few analogies with the so-called "McWorld"--a term invented by Ritzer (1993, 1998) to refer to the global invasion of McDonald's Restaurants--and the IB world. More recently, geographers and social scientists including Appadurai (1996), Paasi (2002) and Short & Kim (1999) have discussed and theorised these globalisation processes further--with fine and profound conceptualisations. In an article on geographical education within IB world schools, the author discusses the analogies with McDonald's and show how they can be seen as both embodiments of cultural homogenisation and as tendencies towards heterogenisation.
