The current study investigated child behavioral change during the early years of elementary school. Behavioral Assessment System for Children (BASC; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 1992) teacher ratings of child behavior were collected over a three-year period. The sample consisted of 162 children measured yearly between first and third grade. Information from three behavioral constructs measured by the BASC (i.e., Adaptive Skills, Externalizing Problems, and Internalizing Problems) were studied with latent growth curve models to determine change in behavioral constructs over time. Overall, linear trajectories best described children's behavioral development, where all scales showed a decrease in the measured construct over time. Growth models showed differences in the rates of decline by composite and also by groups based on perceived levels of risk. For all groups, problematic behaviors decreased over time, but, so did the trajectory for adaptive skills behaviors. The information can assist teachers, school psychologists, and others concerned with the developmental nature of children's emotional and behavioral health. (Contains 3 tables.)
