Russia is nearing the ninetieth anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, the chief result of which was the establishment of Soviet rule on one-sixth of the Earth's surface. October 1917, and its consequences, were and still are the object of a most acute scientific, theoretical, ideological, and political struggle. The views of Russian society concerning the Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917 have undergone substantial and inevitable changes. The views of older generations concerning the Revolution and the Civil War are a hodge-podge of ideological cliches of the Soviet era and a creative reworking of new information replete with distortions and extremes. The younger generation, those between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, whose consciousness has been formed entirely in the post-Soviet period, has not had many opportunities to absorb any other point of view or to take in any opinions except those of the anticommunists. This article reports on a study of how Russian youth's views of the Russian October Revolution differ from those of older people, the sources of information they use to form their views, and how views are influenced by current economic and social problems of the Russian population.
