Netbooks: Small but Powerful Friends
Descy, Don E.
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v53 n2 p9-10 Mar 2009
Netbooks, sometimes called "mini-notebooks," are lightweight, small, and low-priced computers. Some writers ridicule them by calling them "one of the hottest tech toys of the year" (Saltzman, 2008). Others enthusiastically embrace them as "my perfect new travel companion" (Grossman, 2009). Netbooks are not toys. They are honest-to-goodness real laptops...just a little smaller...and cheaper. Netbooks are popping up everywhere. They are the new tool of the business road warrior. Students are also embracing them. Most Netbooks come with an XP or Vista Windows operating system, though some come with a Linux OS (Linpus Lite, Xandros Linus, or a variant) as standard. Cameras, card readers, and most common interface connections (USB, Ethernet, VGA, mini-phone, and microphone inputs) are standard as well. The net in Netbook comes from Internet. All Netbooks are wireless. Software is not a problem. Many come with the OpenOffice Suite, Skype, Firefox, a multimedia player, photo manager, webcams and even games. Those with Windows accept any available Windows-compatible software. Most vendors now include Netbooks in their product line. (Contains 2 figures.)
