Peering behind the Classroom Door
Sherman, Mendel
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v52 n6 p53-54 Nov 2008
Public schools continually work to inform parents and other stakeholders about what takes place in their buildings. Everyone is familiar with report cards, of course, which inform parents through letter grades or verbal descriptions of their children's progress. Nearly every elementary school also holds a parents' night and other events designed to keep parents and interested neighbors abreast of what is going on in their local schools. These school/community events often feature slide shows of still pictures and, more recently, even video clips. Local media outlets cover such events and regularly print stories about the schools. Yet despite all the presentations by the schools and the media, the actual interactions by which a child learns might as well take place inside a black box. They remain largely mysterious to the public. In this article, the author discusses an initiative called Inside Our Schools, which offers a way for schools to keep their communities informed through a brief "classroom documentaries." Inside Our Schools is all about letting the public see and hear what goes on in typical units of instruction. The program presents a natural opportunity for AECT to both further its own mission and serve the public interest. It is based on the conviction that examples of excellent teaching and learning are taking place every day in thousands of classrooms throughout the nation at all grade levels and in all subject areas.
