Unhealthy coping mechanisms become more widely available to young people during their teenage years. Students frequently choose these unhealthy activities as avenues for dealing with the stress of physical and social changes that confront them during adolescence. For these reasons, a need exists for intervention programs that teach adolescents to work toward goals that promote healthy decision making. The health habits that young people establish during adolescence will follow them into their adult lives. Therefore, it is imperative that teens choose positive role models who inspire them to make healthy decisions. To do so, adolescents need responsible adults to encourage them to apply positive coping mechanisms when they encounter stressful situations. Health educators play an important role in the growth process of these students by helping them set constructive personal goals and work to meet these goals. These educators can encourage such growth by using the Project Hero Healthy Intervention Program. In this article, the author discusses the Project Hero Healthy Intervention Program, a goal-setting and healthy decision-making program that helps students realize and learn that people who encounter difficult circumstances and learn from these situations improve their decision-making skills. Through this program, students can create 2 project-based activities that assist them in identifying positive role models who accomplished something productive by making healthy decisions.
