The Impact of Process Observers on Interpersonal Group Therapy
Hogan, Christopher; Harris, Rafael S.; Cassidy, Jennie M.
Journal of College Student Psychotherapy, v21 n1 p21-32 Aug 2006
The impact of including process observers (all master's-level trainees) and their notes on the outcome of interpersonal group therapy at a university counseling center was investigated. For a total of four groups, one method per group of delivering the notes to the participants was designated and assessed for perceived differences. A self-report survey was designed and used to measure how the process observer might have enhanced or detracted from intra and interpersonal factors of group therapy. This survey was tailored for group participants, process observers, and leaders. At a rate of 92%, group members mildly, moderately, or strongly agreed that the process notes (regardless of delivery method) were helpful toward their overall group experience. A categorization procedure was used to identify participants' themes of what was liked and disliked regarding the process observer experience. (Contains 3 tables.)
