In a World of "Us-ness"
Pratapchandran, Sarat
Educational Facility Planner, v43 n2-3 p5-8 2009
In the morning when a child walks into a classroom, he should feel a sense of belonging. In simple terms, this defines the world of "us-ness," a concept that noted educator and new media expert, Professor Stephen Heppell says plays the most important part in designing a new learning facility. Heppell advocates a critical assessment of the needs of learners before designing spaces. Educators should revisit the way schools are being built. Investments in educating children on a per-student cost basis could vary from $8,000 in the United Kingdom to $60 per annum in Kurdistan but, buildings nor per-capita investment in education alone will not make a difference unless people understand what learners need.
