Advanced Standing Revisited: Current Status, Structure, and Issues
Bremner, Judith; Zastrow, Charles
Journal of Teaching in Social Work, v28 n1-2 p101-116 May 2008
A 2004 national survey of CSWE-accredited MSW programs addresses three major questions. (1) Do advanced standing students perform as well as (or better than) traditional social work graduate students? (2) What should be the educational continuum between undergraduate and graduate programs? (3) What is the current status and structure of advanced standing programs? The results of studies which examined the performance of advanced standing versus traditional social work graduates are summarized. The word "continuum" incorrectly suggests there is one right connection between associate degree [right arrow] BSW degree [right arrow] MSW degree [right arrow] doctorate; there are actually many "models of connection." Findings from 70% (117) of MSW programs reveal the current status and structure of advanced standing programs. Given the current philosophy of the CSWE's Commission on Accreditation that emphasizes outcomes and reduced requirements, it is unlikely that any national guidelines on advanced standing will emerge.
