Distributing Leadership in Primary Schools
Hammersley-Fletcher, Linda
Education 3-13, v33 n2 p46-50 Jun 2005
Recent advice on improving schools has centred on the distribution of responsibilities within schools. Whilst the focus of leadership in schools has traditionally been upon the Headteacher, there are now strong arguments to support a greater participation in leadership from teachers (Gold "et al", 2003). This article reports on interviews conducted in each of twenty-two primary schools with the headteacher, a core subject leader and a foundation subject leader. It considers the approaches to leadership adopted and concludes that staff contribution to school improvement and vision should be both valued and encouraged. (Contains 1 table.)
