Report from Hawai'i: The Rising Tide of Arts Education in the Islands
Wood, Paul
Teaching Artist Journal, v3 n1 p4-13 Mar 2005
The establishment of Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC), a community arts facility that prioritizes education at the top of its mission, has been a significant factor in the growth of arts education in Hawai'i. This article describes the role such a facility can play in the kind of educational reform that people envision, and the author's belief that the MACC can provide a model for other communities. As a private, nonprofit and relatively small organization, the MACC can operate around big bureaucracy: hosting conferences, experimenting with workshops, forming alliances, and raising funds for projects. It has helped that the MACC's leadership is stable and united in its mission. It has also helped that the Maui community in general sees the island as a place where art happens, where painters, galleries, community theater groups, and so forth, thrive. The author describes the rising of arts education in the island of Maui.
