In this article, the author talks about Urban Tech, a New York City-based organization that works with schools to teach students the life skills it believes are necessary for academic achievement and workforce readiness. Its Youth Leadership Academy program uses a variety of computer-based, interactive elements to educate students on such topics as personal appearance and substance abuse prevention. Urban Tech is a shining example of the kinds of partnerships developing between school systems and community organizations to provide instructional support to K-12 students, as well as help get computers and internet access to lower-income families where no such resources were before. The author also discusses the factors that make a successful technology-based partnership between a school district and a community organization.
