Successful Study Abroad: Tips for Student Preparation, Immersion, and Postprocessing

This article discusses components that can make study abroad programs more effective so that students successfully improve their language and culture competency and gain a more sophisticated understanding of the host culture. First, the authors offer ideas for language instructors at home on how to integrate culture learning into the classroom and thus prepare students for study abroad. Second, the article provides criteria for evaluating study abroad programs and offers suggestions on how to create academically solid programs with various immersion aspects. Third, the authors present ways to assist students in processing their experiences upon their return.
