Systems, Not Superheroes
Zelman, Susan Tave; Cross, Christopher T.
AASA Journal of Scholarship & Practice, v4 n4 p33-37 Win 2008
Crises create heroes. But just as superheroes are always fighting crime, educators spend too much time putting out fires, and frequently do not get to the root of the problem that might have prevented the situation in the first place. The authors advocate for educational organization around four goals: (1) clear expectations for students; (2) the capacity to teach well; (3) holding both individuals and systems accountable for results; and (4) becoming a high performing, adaptable organization focused on continuous improvement. To achieve these goals, a variety of subsystems must be developed--each part of a complex, interrelated organization that will allow educators to move from crisis management to instructional leadership.
