The author shares the story of La-Keya Williams, a junior at Spelman College who has found a donor willing to help her out for the funds she needed to continue her education. Shortly after classes ended last summer, Ms. Williams realized she would have a hard time coming up with the roughly $36,000 needed to pay for her junior year. She took a summer job and spent her lunch breaks pestering loan companies, but credit was tight and nobody was biting. In July she got a call from someone at a number she did not recognize. Spelman had found a donor willing to help her out. Ms. Williams thought it might have been a hoax. It wasn't--it was $20,000. Her classmates have not been as fortunate. In her work as a resident assistant at Spelman, Ms. Williams has seen the financial downturn hit her students particularly hard, with three of the more than two dozen women on her floor unable to return for the spring semester. With financial uncertainties still swirling, Ms. Williams worries that the pressures on students who remain will continue to intensify. But there's no use worrying, she says. She tells students it's better to do what she did and keep on reaching out for help.
