Removing Barriers to Learning: A Primer
Byrnes, MaryAnn
Principal Leadership, v9 n3 p34-37 Nov 2008
A primer about student accommodations is presented. An accommodation is an adjustment to an activity or a setting that removes a barrier that is caused by a disability so that the person with the disability can have access equal to that of a person without a disability. An accommodation does not guarantee success or a specific level of performance. Appropriate accommodations help a student with a disability demonstrate what he or she knows and can do. Furthermore, researchers say that accommodations create a level playing field for students with a disability. Well-chosen accommodations provide students with disabilities with fair, equal access to educational activities. An appropriate accommodation does not excuse a student from expectations; it permits the student to participate equitably and demonstrate knowledge.
