Struggling between Two Worlds: How College Affects Identity Construction
Perez, Angel B.
Journal of College Admission, n198 p10-13 Win 2008
In this article, the author relates how a new Guyanese student's concerns about fitting in an elite school had made him recall his own experiences. When the author left for college about fourteen years ago, he had no idea what he was about to get into. He was fortunate enough to be admitted into a strong liberal arts college in upstate New York through an opportunity program. He had doubts about surviving in the world of elite, wealthy and white. He recalls how simple things--like picking out unfamiliar food or turning down friends to go downtown to eat--to larger--explaining to his friends why his parents weren't coming to his graduation-- were a constant reminder that he lived in two worlds and didn't belong in either. Here, he expresses how he admired the Guyanese student for embarking on her journey at a young age. Her experiences in college would only force her to further question who she is, who she wants to become and how she will create a life that is representative of her juxtaposing realities.
